Join us for the ‘Sword Technique in Dance and Physical Theatre’ workshop, 26th November 6-8pm at The Place.

Explore martial arts, dance and physical theatre with a focus on swordplay. Reimagine the language of power, strength, and vulnerability via sword technique and contact dance with critically-acclaimed artists Yukiko Masui and Si Rawlinson.

This workshop is open to all levels of movement and martial arts experience. No preparation is required, and all equipment will be provided. Please wear clothes you are comfortable moving in.

About the Workshop Leaders:

Yukiko Masui

Co-founder of SAY, Yukiko is an internationally renowned dancer and choreographer. Her collaborations span global contemporary dance companies, including Agudo Dance, Art of Spectra (SE), and TRIBE. With commercial credits from Nike to Marvel, she brings a unique flair to her choreography. Yukiko's work extends to productions for the National Dance Company of Wales (SAY), Norrdans, The Place, and Ballet Boyz (R&D). Her impact also echoes in notable musical and theatrical productions, such as "The Effect" at the National Theatre and "Miss Julie" at Southwark Playhouse. Yukiko received a Choreography Award from DanceXchange and was mentored by Akram Khan Company, supported by Sky Arts. She is currently an associate artist at The Place and Dance East associates as SAY.

Si Rawlinson

Si Rawlinson is a British Chinese artist, born in Hong Kong with English and Chinese heritage. A theatre-maker and choreographer with a background in dance, his practice is interdisciplinary, mixing hip hop and contemporary dance, physical performance, and theatre. His work has been performed at leading venues across the UK, including Sadler’s Wells, Southbank Centre, Barbican, The Place, Birmingham Hippodrome, Nottingham Playhouse, and Curve Theatre Leicester. He has worked with acclaimed artists including Gary Clarke, Alesandra Seutin, and Requardt & Rosenberg, and has also danced in commercials and on film (Marvel/Disney). Other credits include the role of Kazego/Puppeteer in the Royal Shakespeare Company's Olivier-Award-winning stage adaptation of My Neighbour Totoro at the Barbican.
