Who are you looking for?

Kakilang are looking for an experienced Lighting Designer for an original gig theatre piece, The Dao of Unrepresentative British Chinese Experience, by Daniel York Loh, taking place at Soho Theatre. Music by An-Ting Chang and Directed by Alice Kornitzer.

There will be heavy use of video and projection in the piece for which we have 2 designers on board, jointly covering video, projection, set and costume, whom the lighting designer will work closely with. 

What is the fee?

£2,250 

About the job:

The Lighting Designer’s role will involve:

  • Collaborating with the creative team to create a cohesive vision for the show

  • Attendance at Design Meetings and Production Meetings throughout the rehearsal period.

  • Responsibility for designing all lighting cues for the production 

  • Attendance at certain rehearsals 

  • Attendance and full-time attention/working throughout tech week at Soho Theatre up to and including 21 June (press night) 

  • Programming lighting throughout Soho Theatre tech week.

  • Be reasonable responsive/available for support for lightning issues throughout the run of the show, from 19 June - 13 July

Please be aware there is very minimal additional budget allocated to lighting, and we would expect the Lighting Designer to work within the venue resources.

We have the following roles in our creative and production team: 

  • Writer 

  • Director 

  • Co-Designers (2 people covering Video, Set, Costume) 

  • Production Manager 

  • Stage Manager 

Producing, General Management (including finance & payments), marketing are handled by Kakilang’s in-house staff team with an external PR company supporting too.

The key dates for the production are below:

  • White card: end of March 2024

  • Final Design: May 2024

  • Rehearsals start: 20 May 2024

  • Tech Week @ Battersea Arts Centre: 10 June 2024 (we are not performing at BAC, but using their space to tech the show)* 

  • Get In and Tech Week @ Soho Theatre: 16 - 21 June 2024 

  • Show opens: 19 June 2024

  • Press night: 21 June 2024

  • Closing night: 13 July 2024

We would expect the Lighting Designer to be London based and/or can work in London and to attend rehearsals, tech week, previews and press night. We cannot cover any additional expenses for travel/accommodation. 

BAC tech time will be focused on work on AV and clarifying a cue structure for the show, we will not be programming, plotting or rigging LX, we would expect the Lighting Designer to have some availability, but not full—time.

What will the hiring process be?

Initial applications with a CV with short expression of interest (250 words) sent via the ‘Apply Now’ button. You can also send this via video or voice-note. A smaller number of applicants will later be invited to a 30-minute Zoom interview.
